At BGC PCS, our Performing and Visual Arts program is designed to inspire creativity, critical thinking, and cultural awareness in alignment with the Maryland Fine Arts Standards. These standards guide our curriculum to ensure students develop a comprehensive understanding of artistic processes while fostering the skills necessary to express themselves through various forms of art.
Visual Arts: Our visual arts curriculum encourages students to explore their creativity through hands-on projects in drawing, painting, sculpture, and digital media. Aligned with the Maryland Fine Arts Standards, the curriculum emphasizes four key artistic processes: Creating, Presenting, Responding, and Connecting. Students learn to generate original ideas, develop technical skills, and apply elements of art and principles of design. They also engage in discussions and critiques, helping them develop the ability to analyze and interpret visual works, including their own and those of others. This approach cultivates an appreciation for diverse art forms and cultural expressions while enhancing visual literacy.
Performing Arts: In performing arts, students are provided with opportunities to explore music, dance, and theater, each of which is grounded in the National Core Arts Standards that Maryland has adopted. The performing arts program is structured around the processes of Creating, Performing, Responding, and Connecting. Through music, students develop skills in vocal and instrumental performance, music theory, and composition, while also learning to appreciate music from different cultures and time periods. In dance, students express ideas and emotions through movement, developing physical coordination, rhythm, and performance skills. Our theater program encourages students to engage in improvisation, script analysis, character development, and stage performance, fostering communication, collaboration, and confidence.
